Description

All solid-state batteries can offer increased energy and improved safety for naval aircraft applications. Recently, the ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes has improved significantly. Current solid-state batteries however, still suffer from low power and short cycle life, especially at low temperatures, due to poor interfacial conductivity and stability between solid electrolytes and electrode materials. Lynntech proposes to develop a practical all solid-state (PASS) lithium-ion battery (LIB) based on the combination of core-shell electrode materials and high conductivity solid electrolytes to provide high energy and power, long cycle life, as well as functionality over a wide operating temperature range. During Phase I, Lynntech will develop advanced core-shell electrodes with highly conductive solid electrolytes, and evaluate the capacity, rate capability, cycle life, specific energy, and specific power of an all solid-state battery at the full cell level. A preliminary safety evaluation will also be performed. During Phase II, Lynntech will develop a prototype PASS LIB system to meet the Navys performance requirements. Lynntech will also perform a preliminary cost estimate for battery manufacturing and demonstrate the manufacturing feasibility.
