Description

Recent advances in deep sub-threshold analog and digital electronics have created a class of intelligent electronics capable of power consumption levels as low as 10 nanowatts while in the sensor’s asleep-yet-aware phase of Near Zero Power RF and Sensor Operations (N-ZERO). The sub-threshold circuits require power supply voltages typically in the 0.3 to 0.7 V range, yet the voltages of current commercially available batteries are in excess of 1.2 V. Power hungry electronic voltage regulators are required to produce the 0.3 to 0.7 V potential levels, which can easily dominate the total power consumption and thus limiting the lifetime that the sub-threshold circuits can achieve. In the Phase I SBIR study, Lynntech successfully developed a Long-life Efficient Goal-Oriented (LEGO) solid-state primary battery that uses metal-iodine chemistry, and showed that metal iodine batteries exactly meet the power supply requirements needed for stable sub-threshold circuits. During Phase II, Lynntech will develop and deliver prototype packaged batteries to meet the DoD’s performance requirements.
