Description
This DARPA BAA proposal presents an unprecedented NDI tool to real time quantify mechanical properties and correct laser additive manufacturing process for complex multi-material parts. A LIBS tool is used to study both in-process and post-process for both flat and shaped parts in correlation with material characteristics and process parameters. A laser topography tool is used to characterize geometry. It is the enabling technology for real time characterize the AM parts in terms of temperature, material, geometry, cooling rate, grain structure, and defects and feedback to the AM system for immediate defect correction. A proof of concept demonstration has been carried out at the end of Phase 1. Prototypes will be integrated and demonstrated in AM system at the end of Phase II.
