Description
It is proposed to develop an exploding foil initiator (EFI) system based on a semiconductor diode operating in drift step recovery diode mode (DSRD) . Such architecture enables a discharge of milli-Joule level energy stored in the diode on a nanosecond time scale, producing kilovolts of peak voltage propagating through a short, low-impedance transmission line loaded by the exploding foil. The proposed DSRD system offer significant efficiency, speed and cost advantages over state of the art EFI architectures.
