Description

High fidelity modeling of practical RDE devices, even laboratory scale can be difficult. HyPerComp has performed numerous LES of RDE over a range of conditions and over a range of reactants for the last 10 years under AFRL and DARPA funding .  The proposed effort will build on the strengths of the simulation team at HyPerComp and will use the following capabilities and tools to advance the state-of-the-art in RDE modeling, In Phase-II we will pursue the following objectives based on the above areas of R&D: Enhance the software tools to include advance machine learning algorithms for either accelerated thermo-chemistry computations or for the development of sub-grid combustion models Development of new LES modeling approaches to include wall models to enhance prediction of heat transfer in RDE environments. Development of methodologies for the simulation of the mixing and combustion of liquid propellants in operating conditions typical of RDE combustion chambers. Expand current meshing capabilities to handle complex geometrical features of RDE designs. Generation of experimental data for the validation of high-fidelity computational tools. This can include the use of the experiment efforts undertaken by AFRL on Rotating Detonation Rocket Engines (RDREs). Validate software tools against experimental data using high-fidelity modeling. Large-scale simulations will be performed to verify and validate the implementation of the novel capabilities.
