SimQuest will design a prototype simulator for endovascular access and conduit upsizing that provides the most realistic training availableIt will overcome the shortcomings of existing simulatorscontain biofidelic haptics and novel metricsand allow repeated practice so that proficiency is clearly defined and attainableThe goal is to provide trainees with a technologically advanced solution that allows development and practice of endovascular access conduit upsizing with accurately simulated tools and realistic haptic feelUnlike other trainersthe proposed simulator will start at needle puncturemove seamlessly into guidewire insertion through the justinserted needle and then to the over guidewire upsizing of the conduit catheterThe simulator will be built with an innovative combination ofD printed physical trainer elementsaugmented realityARphysics based simulationand haptics hardware interfacesTo facilitate expansion to other proceduresit will be developed using SimQuestandapos s open source platformOpenSurgSimDuring Phase II we will create a state of the art prototype for our new endovascular surgery trainer based on an open source software simulationThe trainer will generate realistic palpation cues and ultrasound localization without requiring a blood simulantwill automatically record metrics for both the needlestick and catheter guidance portions of the taskand will provide improved haptic feedback sensations compared with currently available endovascular training systemsFollowing Phase IIthe prototype will be ready for validationfield testingand productizationThis project will result in the first simulator to offer complete training in endovascular access and conduit upsizingsimulating actual tasks in real life fashionIt will improve clinical practice byteaching endo vascular accessuse of guidewires cathetersand conduit upsizing as a seamless processproviding accurate haptic feel through an innovative designusing clinical metrics defined by SMEsandcontaining a tissue phantom mannequin providing sense of touch and AR for visual enhancementsSpecific pathologies will be able to be incorporated using a virtual realityVRanatomical componentIn addition to the direct request for this simulator from Prytime Medicalmany training facilities and device manufacturers also requested this innovationProduct launch will be both stand alone and as part of a complete trainer for REBOAintegrating the current RATT with the products of this research and at the request of Prytime MedicalIn addition to being in the public interestand filling a real need in the marketreduction of endovascular surgical errors furthers NHLBIandapos s mission to reduce the burden of heart diseaseand the Cardiovascular Sciences Extramural Research Program Divisionandapos s support of interventions The enhanced endovascular training that will result from this Randamp D effort promises to reduce the disproportionate number of adverse events associated with vascular surgery and thus decrease patient riskIncreased safety and better outcomes resulting from better trained surgeons and others who perform endovascular surgery will result in improved patient outcomes and reduced costsTo commercialize this researchSimQuest is working with Prytime Medicalthe REBOA Companyand will insert this work into their existing RATT mannequin training system and will take advantage of their existing and very successful marketing and salesin just a few monthsREBOA obtained a significant US and global footprintensuring success of the SimQuest endovascular access project
