Description

Combat Lifesavers (CLS) and Combat Medics (68W) are the first responders of the battlefield, and their training and skill maintenance is extremely important to the military. Scenario-based training is limited in how casualties and wounds are presented to trainees, and the amount of hands-on experience that trainees can get in the schoolhouse. Typically wounds are created using simple moulage that looks unrealistic, and does not change over the course of treatment. Furthermore, casualties are played by mannequins or human role-players, so they do not exhibit the physical or mental conditions associated with the injury. To improve the realism of 68W and CLS scenario-based training, SoarTech and UCF propose to develop the Combat Casualty Care Augmented Reality Intelligent Training System (C3ARESYS). C3ARESYS will provide trainees the opportunities to train on wounds and casualties that respond to their treatments while providing feedback to the trainee adapted to the trainees skill level. C3ARESYS will also offload work from the instructor, enabling focus on teaching rather than fixing shortcomings in casualty simulation. In Phase I, we designed C3ARESYS and assessed feasibility; in Phase II, we will build and evaluate a prototype of C3ARESYS and work toward transitioning C3ARESYS to a program of record.
