Description

The US Special Operations Forces (SOF) missions include a variety of short-duration, covert operations (e.g. enemy capture, personnel recovery, intelligence/information gathering) which require extensive operational planning and rehearsal. To assist in planning, accurate 3D physical models of sensitive indoor areas or enemy-occupied buildings is desired; however, obtaining data to build such models is a sensitive task and must be performed quickly and unobtrusively. In order to better support SOF missions and training, Toyon proposes to research and develop innovative and computationally efficient algorithms that process high-resolution still-frame images and/or full motion video (FMV) from handheld devices to generate a photo-realistic, textured 3D model of a buildings interior. During this effort Toyon will perform a feasibility study in order to determine viable options for accurate, high-resolution indoor 3D modeling. Toyon will research component algorithms, down select based on evaluation of their ability to meet SOF mission needs, and implement the down selected component algorithms in an end-to-end processing pipeline to assess the feasibility of various approaches. A feasibility and trade study will be performed including: level-of-detail, model resolution, objective model area, accuracy, completeness, and efficiency.
