Description

Traditional munition guidance packages rely on the Global Positioning System (GPS) or laser designation technologies to target an operator defined location. However, if either of these systems cannot operate, whether they are being actively denied by the enemy or from harsh environmental conditions, the guidance package will fail to function as designed. Toyon Research Corporation proposes to create a vision-based guidance solution that does not rely on external infrastructure during flight or standoff target designation. The system will lock onto and track moving targets, including the target entering a building, while also avoiding obstacles. Design goals for the system will include 1m target accuracy, resistance to jamming and spoofing, and the ability to operate in adverse environmental conditions. One key aspect of the system is that it should be agnostic to the munition type and size. Initial munitions will include 40mm grenades, 2.75inch rockets, 76mm rockets, as well as potential future warheads. In the Phase I effort, Toyon will conduct a feasibility study to assess what is in the art of the possible that satisfies the operational and performance requirements of the system. Anticipated purchase cost and estimated performance metrics of the selected system will be reported.
