Description
Threaded fastening systems in vibrating environments require a secondary locking feature, augmenting primary locking provided by an applied preload, to prevent vibration-induced loosening. The secondary locking feature can be mechanical, prevailing torque-type, or an adhesive. Self-locking nutplates and inserts are often more expensive than adhesives, require retorquing or on-torque adjustments, and need extra space. Therefore, anaerobic adhesives such as Loctite can a better alternative, especially when access is limited. However, liquid locking compounds (LLCs) are very application process-sensitive, and many factors can affect the curing process. Triton Systems, Inc. proposes to further advance the process solution and the tool which had been developed in Phase I to apply accurate volumes of LLCs to various fastener systems reproducibly, enabling reliable performance of LLCs as a secondary locking feature. The process solution will specify cure time and the minimum amount of LLCs required to achieve optimum breakaway torque values. In conjunction, Triton will further improve the LLC dispensing tool for accuracy and repeatability of delivering small volumes.Approved for Public Release | 18-MDA-9522 (23 Feb 18)
