Description
A critical capability of simulation-based training environments is the degree to which they present a faithful representation of reality. However, there is a scarcity of scientifically-sound tools and methodologies to assess when increased fidelity will lead to better mission effective performance, and thus substantiate associated high costs that often accompany the development of certain simulator features. To address this gap, the Fidelity Levels for Optimal Training Effectiveness (FLOTE) system will be developed to assess the training value of high-cost simulator features that have uncertain or inconclusive expected utility based on subject matter expert (SME) input. As part of the FLOTE system, SME judgments will be fused with more objective data via mini-experiments. The result will be a summary of what is known about the features, including the current levels of uncertainty, such that the decision-makers are better positioned to make smart investments and, therefore, reduce costs while maintaining optimal training for Warfighters.
