Description

In partnership with the Strausfeld Lab at the University of Arizona, BNS proposes to develop an Amplitude and Polarization High-speed Image Display (APHID) based on our previous VIS/NIR Hyperspectral Image Projector (HIP) design. Using BNS-developed liquid crystal (LC) spatial light modulators (SLMs), this display will provide high-speed multispectral wide-field visual stimulus to invertebrates over a 300-650 nm wavelength range, with the ability to provide 8-bit analog control of amplitude and linear polarization. BNS is a leader in the development of high-speed SLMs, with our current SLMs operating in excess of 400 Hz. In Phase I we will adapt our design for the 300-650 nm wavelength range, choosing a broadband illumination source for the APHIDs spectral engine and testing new LC cell types that will improve LC longevity in the UV range. Using the new LC test cells, we will demonstrate amplitude and polarization modulation at multiple wavelengths, as proof of concept for new UV-hardy SLMs to be produced in Phase II. We will also perform initial design and simulation of our widefield projection scheme, working with the Strausfeld Lab to identify any resolution and/or aberration effects to be addressed in Phase II refinements.
