Description
The proposed effort investigates non-mechanical beam steering devices for application to infrared (IR) laser power distribution. The planned approach leverages recent advances Boulder Nonlinear Systems has made in wide angle beam steering based on liquid crystal polarization gratings (LCPGs). The photonic switch will ideally cover the wavelength range from 1.06 um to 5 um. BNS proposes to design and develop a switching technology that covers this range using three bands: 1.06 -1.8 um, 1.8-3 um and 3-5 um.

For Phase I Boulder Nonlinear Systems, proposes to build photonic switching components and demonstrate coupling different wavelengths to the same output fibers. During the base effort two SWIR wavelengths will be tested. This will be extended to the MWIR during the Phase I Option. Efforts to mitigate wavelength dispersion, will also be explored. Finally we will design a prototype photonic switch to be implemented in Phase II.
