Description

Weather requirements for air missile defense (AMD) are outdated, leaving launch decisions makers with little confidence in considering weather in the weapons assignment decision process. As such, the presence of weather reduces the probability of intercept, putting the Warfighter at risk. In this proposal, an integration effort is presented to leverage several years of DoD investment in weather requirements research to develop an in situ weather assessment capability for autonomous weather decision support in the PATRIOT missile system. When applied to several systems, this capability provides broader battlespace weather awareness and response. The proposed technology will support AMD users in training, combat readiness planning, and engagement response. Phase I will focus on developing an approach for integrating relevant DoD invested technologies into a seamless working process. In Phase II, a prototype system will be developed in preparation for operational testing. A part of the transition effort will also target user training, allowing the user to shape the future of the capability. The successful completion of this effort will provide the process for a game changing technology whereby contemporary weather information is effectively treated as an actor in the battlespace.
