Description
The goal of this project is to develop an augmented reality application, ASSET-AR, that supports the delivery of the Cricothyroidotomy emergency procedure. Team Cole Engineering Services Inc. (CESI), which includes the USF Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), leverages our combined experience in developing augmented reality applications and educating and training practicing surgeons, surgical residents, medical students using simulation-based technologies. In Phase I we have three main technical objectives: 1. Develop scene-registration technologies that utilizes novel markers to accurately map a human manikin. 2. Determine anatomical layers and required correlation between real and virtual worlds in order to deliver successful enhancement of Cricothyroidotomy teaching. 3. Develop an application that utilizes accurate scene registration combined with high resolution anatomical layers to support the Cricothyroidotomy emergency procedure. Accomplishing these tasks in Phase I of this SBIR effort paves the way for inclusion of AR based enhancements in support of Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) and Advanced Trauma Life Support Course (ATLS) as well as numerous other medical and non-medical applications.
