Description
Effective analysis of countermeasure deployment requires simulation tools having good application scalability and an ability to model transport across multiple domains, spanning initial launch to far field settling under gravity.In Phase I, CDI demonstrated an initial version of such a multi-domain computational model, focusing on modeling of chaff launches from Army helicopters.The Phase I model captures the input parameters governing the problem, including: dimensions and properties of representative chaff dipoles and launch energetics; launches from multiple placements and orientations on the airframe; the ability to model any Army rotorcraft platform, including the effect of fuselage- and rotor-induced flow fields; and the capability to track behavior during both steady and maneuvering flight.Phase II will expand upon the demonstrated ability of this physics-based model to replicate observed behavior of discharged chaff in flight, with further model improvements that will be both supported by and validated with data to be collected during additional countermeasures testing.The model will also be extended to include: IR countermeasures capability, including pyrotechnic and pyrophoric flares; features for supporting dispenser placement design; integration of separately generated flow field data; maneuvering flight and real-time operation; and interfaces to external RCS and IR signature estimation software.
