Description
ABSTRACT: Cornerstone Research Group Inc. (CRG) and EaglePicher propose to develop a SAPI Conformal Battery to meet the Air Forces operational needs for light weight impact resistant man portable energy storage. The SAPI conformal battery will be a BB-2590 battery equivalent or greater in a conformal package capable of installation behind a SAPI plate in a dismounted soldiers plate carrier vest. CRG will draw from its past experience in composite materials, manufacturing, rapid prototyping, flexible circuit development, power electronics, and advanced cell research to develop a light weight battery pack that addresses the challenges of SAPI carrier space limitations.EaglePicher, a leader in military and industrial battery manufacturing, has cell energy densities, already in the 250-300 Wh/kg (1C discharge) range, exceeding energy densities discussed in the solicitation. CRG is also developing next generation high energy density (>400 Wh/kg) battery cells including lithium-air and lithium-sulfur chemistries with the Army in a Phase II STTR (contract W56KGU-16-C-0001) and plans to integrate lithium-sulfur cells into the SAPI conformal battery as technology matures.
