Description
Current depot-level manufacturing systems are not responsive to changing requirements and flexible specifications. The serial arrangement of individual work cells results in a lengthy timeline to complete the critically needed part; thus, critical assets are out of service for an extended period of time. The Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) is a new approach used by mass manufacturers to respond to the short timelines and flexibility demanded by the highly competitive globalized marketplace.Creares innovation to implement RMS concepts at the depot-level is our Reconfigurable Machining Cell (RMC) that combines the functionality of many different operations in a single machine with a unified CNC controller; thus, using a single platform, production can be optimized with minimal time spent moving or setting up the part. Our RMC is a comprehensive approach to address the key issues that limit the productivity and effectiveness of the depot maintenance team.During the Phase I project, we will develop key performance specifications, outline a preliminary RMC design, and complete a cost benefit analysis.During Phase II, we will partner with multiple Air Force Sustainment Centers, complete the modular system design, fabricate a prototype, demonstrate it to potential users, and transition the technology.
