Description
High brightness x ray sources are large and expensive due to the extreme thermal conditions produced when generating the x rays. Creare proposes to advance the brightness of x ray sources in the 9-11 keV range beyond the current state-of-the-art using an innovative thermal design that builds on Creares experience in high-heat flux thermal management, vacuum systems, and precision machinery. During Phase I, we will model the heat transfer into the cathode, produce a mechanical design of the system, and calculate the electron absorption and x ray generation of the cathode. We also plan to fabricate and test a proof-of-concept cathode and provide detailed system level designs. In Phase II, we will build the advanced cathode and complete the high brilliance x ray system including the vacuum chamber, power supply, chiller and safety interlocks.
