Description
ABSTRACT: High pressure compressor blades are subject to damage on the leading and trailing edges of the blades due to foreign objects.Repair of this damage is currently performed manually using grinding to blend out the damaged regions.Reliance on manual grinding operations requires highly skilled operators, is time consuming, and does not permit collection of data characterizing the nature of the defect and ensuing repair.Creare proposes to develop an Automated Blade Repair System (ABRS) incorporating defect detection and automated repair of different types of defects with a high degree of repeatability.Our system integrates several novel technologies to provide a solution that is extremely well suited for use in the depot environment.; BENEFIT: The technology developed on this project will provide a new capability for rapid, fully automated inspection and repair of high pressure compressor blades for both military and commercial sectors.
