Description

ABSTRACT: The majority of the current USAF fleet of aircraft was developed prior to widespread 3D modeling software thus all subsequent developed technical data is flat 2D. Developing these models for the aging fleet will allow these benefits to be obtained. Developing 3D models for the USAF aging fleet will be achieved in a multipronged approach including leveraging current models, direct scanning, manual modeling, and scalable vector graphics then outputting the models in the required formats as needed. Once developed, these 3D models can be leveraged in a visualization system capable of tying models with technical data directly interacting with approved systems including 202, 107, and ETIMS. Eliminating unnecessary labor to describe and detail a 3D task with 2D data along with the current manual effort to document its results will reduce time and save money. During Phase I, ES3 will develop and demonstrate the feasibility of a system that will develop 3D models and output them in the required format for the identified uses. ES3 will also demonstrate the feasibility of visualization for developed 3D models tied with approved data sources to improve a USAF selected maintenance task such as NDI on the wing of the KC-135.; BENEFIT: ES3 anticipates the results of the Phase I work will validate the feasibility and need for immediate pursuit of Phase II efforts. After successful development and implementation of the 3D Model Generation and Task Visualization Software System: Decreased flow days for PDM of selected aircraft(decreased cost) Improved PDM productivity through task visualization and improved process control through decreased dependency on tribal knowledge (increased quality) Increased throughput capability of the repair depot due to decreased time to detail task and record and share test/maintenance results(increased surge capacity)
