Description

The objective of this project is to demonstrate the feasibility of a self-aligning prosthesis adapter for both static and dynamic aligning. Phase I research is focused on a product compatible with existing trans-tibial prostheses but the concept can be extended to other types. Currently, static alignment is performed with translation and rotation adapters. Dynamic alignment is more challenging because it involves all gait positions in all planes. We propose a compliant mechanism that acts like a hybrid rotational-translational spring. While conventional springs (or compliant gel liners) only deform in the direction of the force, our unique spring redistributes any misaligned force in the prosthesis. We propose a functionally symmetric design to achieve this for all gait positions and planes (sagittal, frontal, transverse). We will deliver a detailed finite element design as well as gait simulation for both biomechanical perfection and comfort. Our product is passive and tunable to meet patient specific needs. Compliant mechanisms are assembly-free by nature and thus inherently suitable for 3D printing to lower cost and increase customizability.
