Project Summary This Phase I SBIR project is designed to develop new biodegradable hydrophilic coatings for ureteral stentsUreteral stents are widely used to maintain drainage of the upper urinary tract and instrumental in management of stone diseaseas well as in cases of other ureteral obstruction such as injuryfibrosis or malignanciesHoweverunlike cardiovascular stentsureteral stents are recommended for usemonths or less due to encrustation and biofilm formationOverof ureteral stents are encrusted at thismonth time periodmaking removal difficult and causing patients painThe best commercial coatings reduce encrustation thickness byand extent of encrustion by onlyover uncoated ureteral stentsThis project focuses on novel coatings which release agents designed to minimize encrustationIn Phase Itwo different agents were shown to reduce encrustationoverweeks in vitroIn Phase IIone coating will be optimized for full scale use on ureteral stents and implanted in aday GLP porcine study to prepare for FDA submission
