Description
The shape of a parachute changes during the deployment of the canopy due to control inputs by the paratrooper/guidance system and environmental effects. However, there are currently no effective ways to measure the shape of the parachute and the airflow around the parachute from a realistic jump. This has limited the ability of developmental testers to assess hazards to the paratroopers and airdrop load due to canopy starvation and interactions. To address this problem, Intelligent Automation, Inc. (IAI) proposes the design of a Parachute Shape Scanner (PSS) system that satisfies all of the requirements of the U.S. Army. PSS is a small form factor sensor that is safe to mount on a paratroopers helmet or strap to a paratroopers chest. Its design is flexible, modular, scalable that can be extended to suit small or large parachutes. In Phase I, IAI conducted requirement analysis, system design, proof-of-concept experiments, and demonstrate PSS feasibility. In Phase II, IAI will develop a TRL-6 PSS prototype that will meet the US Armys requirements. This prototype system will be tested and verified in laboratory and relevant environments.
