Description
Current military batteries are flammable and suffer from insufficient specific energy, which create safety and tactical burden for the soldiers. The use of solid-state batteries may offer enhanced safety and energy density; however, current solid-state technology typically relies on metallic lithium anode, which cannot be rapidly charged or discharged at low temperatures and is unsafe if exposed to air or water. Lynntech proposes to develop a conformal safe solid-state (CS3) high energy and high power lithium-ion battery (LIB) by using the combination of high-capacity flexible silicon anodes, lithium-rich layered oxide cathodes, as well as flexible and conductive solid electrolytes. This approach will offer a CS3 battery with a long cycle life over a wide operating temperature range, high rate capability, low inherent materials and systems safety risks that can conform to the desired shape. During Phase I, Lynntech will develop all solid-state Li-ion cells, and evaluate the capacity, rate capability, cycle life, specific energy, and specific power at the full cell level. Flexibility testing will also be performed. During Phase II, Lynntech will develop a prototype CS3 battery to meet the Armys performance requirements. Lynntech will also perform preliminary cell abuse tolerance testing and design of scalable cell manufacturing.
