Description
Lynntech proposes to develop a novel nylon-nanomaterial composite yarn which will function as an in-situ multifunctional strain sensor and structural element. The yarn will have beneficial peizoresistivity properties, as well as having a modulus and yield stress similar to that of commercial nylon yarn. When used in parachute cords, the material will function as a low-profile strain sensor, while still providing the mechanical strength demonstrated by commericially available nylon yarns. Because the yarn will not have significant increase in weight and volume, relative to commercially available nylon yarn, the sensor will not adversely effect parachute function, nor require modification of packing or deployment procedures. This will allow the yarn to replace one of the core yarns in parachute cord, and provide sensing capability for laboratory and fielded parachute deployments and flights.
