Description
The technology pathway to transition the successful CO2 removal system into small-scale production, and address technical hurdles associated with manufacturing, is outlined in this proposal. The electrochemical CO2 removal system generates no heat as it separates CO2 from the humid breathing gas mixture. In parallel, a breath monitoring micro-sensor array to measure temperature, humidity, CO2, and O2 within the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is being developed. This micro-sensor is designed as an adaptable, drop-in system, which could be implemented into existing SCBA systems. Advanced CO2 separating technology combined with micro-sensors and controls allows for optimal control over system components, eliminates heat-generating CO2 scrubbers, and regulates humidity and air quality. We have demonstrated removing CO2 at a rate of 2.7 L CO2/min at a breathing rate of 87 L/min. The packaged system would be less than 7.1" x 9.1" x 6.5" and weigh less than 5.7 lb. The Sequential Phase II will optimize performance, scale-up production, and transition the technology into a functional prototype for testing under operational conditions.
