Description
The Marine Corps Systems Command (MARCORSYSCOM) seeks to find an integrated and insulative solution for a segmented whip antenna as well as a monopole blade radio antenna. The impetus of the proposed work is to identify and evaluate protective materials that greatly reduce the risk of electrocution without sacrificing antenna/communications performance. The success of this program rests on the following criteria: 1.) Create a rugged, low-friction antenna cover that insulates the radio and user from electrical shock; 2.) Design a lightweight, easy-to-install concealment system that immediately integrates to the existing whip and blade antennas (in the field or in depot), and 3.) Suppresses visual cues to enemy combatants. Material properties and characteristics include abrasion- and wear-resistant; low coefficient of friction, and lightweight. However, it is bulky and inconvenient for Marines who need to maintain a tactical, mission-focused state of readiness. METSS proposes to assist MARCORSYSCOM in the development of integrated antenna protection system. The development effort will focus on designs that allow easy application of the antenna shielding to Marines operating down-range or deployed in logistical depot.
