Description

Canard Actuation System (CAS) design has traditionally been an iterative, complicated and costly process, with each implementation unique. Sufficiently balancing launch survivability, the Guidance, Navigation & Control (GN&C) requirements, cost, weight, power, volume and packaging constraints of the projectile itself is a challenging process. To improve this process the Army seeks a CAS design methodology that is highly scalable and configurable. The CAS design tool will allow designers to more easily match GN&C needs to actuation technologies that will be suitable to the projectile design space. Specifically the Army requires a CAS sizing and optimization tool that is scalable across many different calibers. Mid endeavors to build upon its Phase I successes to produce a multi-disciplinary modeling tool, with sufficient validation, to create scalable CAS to greatly reduce implementation time and cost.
