Description
A Phase II program continuation will provide a pivotal bridge enabling the Phase III integration of low temperature cured HybridSil polyimides within next-generation Army armament composites. To that end, NanoSonic will develop and empirically optimize innovative reactive diluents that support the room temperature processing and curing of HybridSil polyimides without the use of solvents. These systems will be used to create carbon fiber prepreg tows and tapes that will be used to construct composites with mechanical properties that exceed ARDEC performance requirements between -70 to 1,000 F. By transitioning its HybridSil polyimide technology to prepreg filament winding and tape placement composite manufacturing methods, NanoSonic will significantly increase control and tailorability of resin content, as well as substantially increase Phase III marketability through substantially enhanced manufacturing efficiency with reduced waste, lower labor costs, and VOC-free processing. Down-selected HybridSil polyimides will be scaled up to 200-gallon batch production quantities for Phase III production and distribution throughout the Army and defense industry.
