Description

The objective of this SBIR program is to develop sensors to increase oxygen mask use by pilots and provide information about pilot respiration. NanoSonic will integrate two kinds of sensors into pilot oxygen masks to 1) determine comfort and fit, and 2) indicate respiration rate and pulmonary function. First, we will integrate stretchable piezoresistive Metal Rubber strain sensors into and onto the mask material to provide a measure of comfort, fit and seal. Strain levels corresponding to correct fit will be determined for each individual wearer and verified each time the mask is donned. Second, we will integrate an optical fiber respiration sensor into the mask so its exposed tip is near the nose of the wearer. By depositing a set of structured molecular layers on the tip of an optical fiber, the fiber can be used to measure changes in humidity associated with respiration. Change in humidity as a function of time during exhaling gives an indication of pulmonary activity along the respiratory airway. Used in this way, the unobtrusive fiber sensor can be used as a spirometer to determine airway resistance and provide an indication of pilot activity. NanoSonic will develop and deliver prototype sensors during Phase I.
