Description
Navitas proposes to develop and demonstrate a lithium battery stable under long term storage at 0V. Cathode and anode additives will be used to pin the anode potential below the copper dissolution potential at 0V cell potential. Copper dissolution will be further mitigated through electrolyte additives. A synthetic SEI layer will be created on the anode to stabilize against degradation if the anode potential is pulled above the formation potential for the intrinsic SEI layer. Phase I will demonstrate the tolerance to both repeated and extended exposure of a prototype cell to very low voltage (~0V) where the cycling shows no deterioration in performance. Phase II will develop and deliver a minimum of five large format (~9 Ah)prototype cells to the Navy for pulse load testing. Navitas will conduct performance integration and risk assessments, and develop a cost benefit analysis and cost estimate for a naval shipboard unit. The company will prepare a Phase III development plan to transition the technology to Navy and potential commercial use.
