Description
As the need for enhanced munitions continues, range extension, precision guidance and increased situational awareness are critical enabling technologies. Orbital Research has proven the feasibility of developing 3 core technologies that provide these enhanced capabilities: a Control Actuation System to provide range extension and maneuverability; a Configurable Guidance Sensor Suite to provide Guidance, Navigation and Control; and an imaging system to provide terminal guidance capabilities and increased awareness. Through previous efforts Orbital has developed hardware prototypes for these subsystems and demonstrated preliminary performance on a 40mm airframe. Orbital has designed these technologies in a modular and open architecture so they can be rapidly scaled to integrate with larger caliber munitions, including 40mm, 120mm and 155mm. Based upon the successes of previous phases, Orbital will demonstrate the scalability of the technologies by integrating these various airframes. By following the modular design strategy and maintaining a flexible architecture Orbital will rapidly insert their core technologies in these airframes and support live-fire testing to evaluate the survivability and overall performance in relevant environments. The result(s) will be mature prototype technologies that can be leveraged by the Army on future programs, as well as a modular/flexible design method for precision guidance development.
