Description

The development of precision shoulder launched munitions and other lightweight, soldier borne weapons systems requires a new class of sensors and sensor systems that can autonomously detect and discriminate between various target classes in real time. This is especially true for fire and forget munitions where the weapon has an on-board seeker system that can autonomously hone in on a desired target. Recent research shows that a wide variety of sensor systems including stand-off sensors for collision avoidance, advanced infrared and low light detectors, RF detectors, magnetometers, direct impact sensors as well as others can be used to detect various targets in and around unmanned air and ground vehicles as well as missile systems. The goal of this research is to develop and integrate several of these sensors to form a unique miniaturized sensor system that can be used not only to detect various targets but also discriminate between target classes. Specifically, the system of sensor systems will be developed to integrate with soldier borne weapons systems and will be designed to perform the detection and discrimination functions autonomously within 100 microseconds and with better than 95% accuracy.
