Description
Protection Engineering Consultants (PEC) has teamed with Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to develop and evaluate a novel high-rate loading procedure, that employs pulse energy sources to generate short duration shock waves within solid materials. This approach can be readily used to measure some of the required material properties, while modifications will be required to measure other properties; the target set of material properties includes elastic modulus, critical fracture tension, the Taylor-Quinney parameter, flow stress as a function of strain rate, and the plastic strain rate as a function of shear stress.PEC will evaluate existing constitutive models to determine if they can be extended to these extreme loading rates; if not, modifications or new models will be proposed.PEC will employ these material models (as is and modified) to simulate the SwRI shock loading technique.Approved for Public Release | 17-MDA-9219 (31 May 17)
