Description
ABSTRACT: The size, shape, and velocity distribution of fragments are critical for the complete characterization of high-explosive fragmentation process. Such information is needed for the qualification of new energetic materials as well as for warhead design. Current methods to characterize such fragmentation processes are time consuming because they are performed manually. Such methods are limited by their resolution, inability to provide measurements in environments with high luminosity fireballs, and inability to map the trajectories of fragments traveling at high speeds. We propose to develop an ultra-fast volumetric digital imaging technique for mapping the shape, size, and velocity of explosively driven fragments. The proposed turnkey system will allow dynamic 2D and 3D mapping of fragment trajectories, and provide center of mass and velocity of the fragments in various graphical and tabular formats in near real-time.; BENEFIT: The proposed technology will address the often incredibly demanding requirements for imaging otherwise concealed, near-instantaneous and/or transient events and structures, where optical imaging or other means of information capture or gathering are impossible, inadequate or insufficient individually. Specifically, the proposed technologies are ideal for imaging and discerning the behavior of objects moving at high-speed, such as the positions and activities of pistons, valves and/or other metallic, ceramic and/or composite components in engines during fuel injection and combustion, air bag deployment testing and determining the effects of impacts on auto body components, and testing protective gear such as helmets for construction, motorcycle/bicycle and sports activities. It will also find widespread use in medical, industrial, and homeland security applications.
