Description
San Diego Composites (SDC) is developing a toroidal composite overwrap pressure vessel (COPV) for use on next generation propulsion systems. A development effort sought to optimize the electron beam welding process parameters to reduce weld integrity sensitivity to poor fit up conditions when butt-welding the thin titanium liners integral to these composite overwrapped tanks. Results from this development effort indicated that tuning of process parameters can help mitigate the detrimental effects of poor fit up.The objective of the Phase 2 project is to demonstrate low cost toroid COPV with a focus on forming of metal liners in the toroid geometry, electron beam welding of the liners, and composite overwrapping.Validation of pressure performance will be conducted with proof and burst testing.
