Description

Scientific Solutions, Inc. (SSI), teamed with BAE Systems and Southall Environmental Associates, Inc. (SEA), proposes to investigate the feasibility of using commercially available active sonar to autonomously identify and track marine mammals from transiting SURTASS-LFA surface ships at ranges out to and beyond 2,000 yards. Active sonar has been proven effective to detect and track marine animals under various conditions and system configurations. The logical next step is to establish the capability, conditions and configuration that would overlap with the marine mammal detection requirement provided by the current system. Then establish a route for the evolution of the HFM3 software to provide mechanisms to track, classify, and provide the ability to deliver actionable high fidelity information for the watch stander. This will be done by integrating the commercially available sonar head with the broadband track-before-alert algorithms and software SSI and BAE Systems have developed for the identification and tracking of divers and unmanned underwater vehicles in a harbor environment. These algorithms and software provide processes to improve the capability to rank and modify the classifying information. By training the classification engine database we continually evolve the classification process.
