Description
Accelerator components such as damping rings make use of precisely-aligned magnetic fields to achieve performance. Certifying and optimizing these systems requires instrumentation that can measure the magnetic field and its spatial distribution. Furthermore, the instruments must fit within the limited space available in the beam path. Southwest Sciences plans to investigate a magnetic field imaging system based on spatially- resolved spectroscopy of nitrogen-vacancy-doped (NV) diamonds (size 5x5mm) to measure magnetic field components at a number of locations, thus creating a map of the magnetic field strength. The map will be used to determine the desired centroid of the magnetic field. The Phase I research will consist of laboratory experiments to identify the best spectroscopic method, the best optical method for measuring the field at multiple locations, and ways to combine the magnetic information with beam information. Spatially resolved magnetic measurements are used for quality control of devices that produce magnetic fields. At lower magnetic fields, applications include biological and medical research, as well as mineral exploration.
