Description

Systems and Technology Research (STR) is developing a preliminary system design and prototype algorithms for mapping the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) in an urban environment using 50 or greater networked UAVs flying at low altitudes. Urban spectrum utilization will continue to grow with the proliferation of wireless Internet of Things (IoT) devices and communications that will increasingly use secondary user cognitive radio techniques to find and use available channels. Our system uses a low cost, COTs design that bring sensors close to low power emitters and provides EMS situational awareness to users on the network. System products include a spatial "heat map" of spectrum utilization versus time and frequency as well as location and characterization of stationary and moving emitters in the field of regard. Our system includes automated UAV route planning designed to optimize system performance metrics and greatly reduce operator workload. The system outputs, may be used, for example, by Air Operations Center (AOC) Electronic Warfare Coordination Cells to deconflict Air Force spectrum requirements with existing civilian host nation usage and known adversary usage patterns. These outputs are used to provide operational agility, helping planners resolve and mitigate known conflicts, reducing likelihood of electronic fratricide or tactical surprise.
