Description
The Department of Energy has supported an extensive program in modeling and simulation, which has enriched scientific discovery and advanced scientific use of High Performance Computing. Due to the fact that many potential users do not have access to high performance resources and that codes are not easy to use, these advances have been underutilized in engineering and manufacturing. General statement of how the problem is being addressed The proposed StratuSim tools will offer an easy-to-adopt and uniform interface to a wide range of high performance codes on a cloud. Using StratuSim we will implement a cloud service for Design For Manufacturing for modeling Silicon Photonics devices. This service will help to advance the design of photonics integrated circuits to produce the data movement rates needed to reach exascale and support the telecommunications industry. What is to be done in Phase I? Currently developed graphical interfaces and cloud container technology will be combined and adapted to be easily configurable by code teams and benchmarked with a large photonics simulation on a variety of platforms. The goal is to evaluate the minimal set needed to port existing codes to run in more ubiquitous cloud environments while still taking advantage of high performance hardware components. Commercial Applications and other benefits High performance commercial codes exemplifying the technology transfer to the engineering and manufacturing communities would increase in the market value if they ran on the cloud. Further consulting business is possible working with simulation teams and cloud service providers. The Silicon Photonics service will be of use for optical data centers, communications companies, computing manufacturers, foundries and the Integrated Photonics Manufacturing Institute.
