Description

A composite matrix resin was demonstrated during Phase I that will reduce the cost of structural tactical motor hardware. While the resin was designed specifically for filament winding applications, the technology could easily be transitioned to additional composite fabrication areas. Formulated resin systems were prepared to obtain the desired processing properties and high glass transition temperature. Combinations of multifunctional epoxy resin components and a toughener were found to deliver the required thermal and mechanical properties. Viscometry tests indicate that the resin system will provide a viscosity that falls within the optimal range required for filament winding of rocket motor casings. In addition, real-time cure dynamics tests demonstrated cure rates that will permit seamless integration into the production environment. The Phase II team will continue development of the composite matrix resin materials and processes that were demonstrated during Phase I. The overall objective of the Phase II research effort will be the transition of the developed resins system to a production environment. Pressure vessels and a representative composite rocket motorcase will be fabricated during Phase II.
