Description

Light weight Si based ceramic matrix composites are currently being considered as a replacement of the Ni based superalloy components of the future aero turbine engines for increased specific power and efficiency. However, such composites suffer from the surface recession under high temperature combustion environment of the turbine engine. Environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) are necessary to protect the composites from surface recession. State-of-the art EBCs themselves suffer from the particle laden engine environment. In this SBIR Phase I proposal, UES Inc., in collaboration with the Penn State University and HAMR Indus, proposes to develop novel top protective coatings to mitigate the EBC damage from the particle laden engine environment
