Description
To meet the U.S. military need for a near-single-photon low-light-level passive imager, a large-format, near-infrared (NIR)-sensitive silicon single-photon avalanche-diode (SPAD) digital imager capable of high-dynamic range, high detection efficiency, and low dark counts will be developed. Toward this end, in Phase I, a 256 x 256-element SPAD imager will be integrated into a camera, characterized, and demonstrated. The test results, alongside application requirements, will be used to design, model and simulate a mega-pixel (e.g., 1280 x 1024) SPAD imager, with greater than 31 bits of dynamic range. In Phase II, the large-format SPAD imager with enhanced NIR sensitivity will be fabricated, characterized, and shown to meet the solicited requirements. A camera will be used to conduct controlled field experiments.
