Description
The objective is to develop a portable closed loop burn resuscitation system to improve treatment for serious burn patients. Burns represent 5-10% of overall combat casualties and a significant portion of survivable deaths. Severely burned patients can require 20+ liters within the first 24 hours of care. Effective resuscitation must be titrated to the individual patients physiological response. Suboptimal fluid therapy, with too much or too little fluid, can result in organ dysfunction, sepsis and death. Decision support technologies have been associated with improved clinical outcomes. This proposal seeks to build a closed loop system to optimize burn resuscitation, resulting in improved outcomes, reduced manual data entry and mental calculations and being a force multiplier to allow clinicians to provide care for multiple casualties simultaneously.
