Description
This project seeks to further develop to a level of commercial implementation (TRL8) this firms prior, unique voltammetric electrochemical sensor technology, with fingerprint detection of TICs and CWAs in < 10s. The portable, body-wearable, handheld technology incorporates three Modules: (1) Disposable, flexible sensing element, 1cmX1cmX1mm, 2g, $5. (2) Microcontroller, 2cmX2cmX1cm, uses 9V battery, poweruW/cm^2, 200g (incl. battery), $220. (3) Android cellphone interface linkable to Armys NettWarrior, 250g, $250. Sensing elements are based on unique, functionalized electrodes comprising durable metalized microporous membranes, conducting polymers, ionic liquid electrolytes. Modules (2), (3) are at ca. TRL7 level, with only the expanded databases and final user-friendly displays to be developed. Module (1) is at ca. TRL 5. In just-completed tests at Battelle, very good detection of four TICs and fair detection of two of three CWAs was demonstrated at IDLH or lower levels with interferents. The proposed work will: (1) Test expanded list of CWAs/TICs under additional temperature/humidity conditions, with further functionalization/refinement of sensing electrodes for more specific response to each analyte. (2) Further refine data analysis algorithms, expand analyte database. (3) Develop final user-friendly results display/alarm. (4) Finalize rugged, field-use, multi-sensor-suite packaging. (5) Further miniaturize, refine Microcontroller hardware. (6) Address manufacture/commercialization.
