Description
Military operations have an ever increasing demand for battery power sources in a wide variety of applications, from sensors, communications and powering soldiers, to high-power weapons and vehicle applications. However, state of the art batteries cannot meet the requirements of next generation military equipment. Lead acid batteries, because of their low cost, safety and high level of recyclability still holding the dominant share in the military as well as the commercial rechargeable battery markets. However, the low specific energy (< 35 Wh/kg) and short deep cycle life (< 150) of lead acid batteris severely limit their use in next generation military vehicle applications. In this SBIR program, an innovative bipolar lead acid battery with a lightweight and corrosion resistant current collector and unique design concept was proposed to address the urgent demand for improved lead acid battery technology. In the Phase I program, the feasibility of our approaches has been successfully demonstrated.
