Description

During the current programs we have developed a novel biological-based power generating system with bio-inspired design leading to high energy density (run time) from multiple readily available fuels (sugars, alcohols) and using renewable biocatalysts (enzymes).The electron transfer efficiency of the enzyme-catalyzed reactions at electrodes has been significantly increased, thereby establishing a new state-of-the-art power source for military and commercial systems.The current status of the project requires further optimization of the material system as well as several operational parameters.Focuses will include development of enzyme cascades for deeper oxidation of fuel and optimization of the prototype in the Armys Conformal Wearable Battery footprint.During this program, a complete system-level prototype will be developed and delivered for testing at a suitable field trial program.A multi-disciplinary team with proven expertise in electrochemical power sources, bio-microsystems, bio-electrochemistry, and system design has been assembled to accomplish these goals.
