Description

Naval unmanned vehicle operators require advanced mission displays to effectively collaborate with planning and execution automation in complex and dynamic operating environments. To address this, we will extend our previous successful efforts to develop Advanced Mission Display and Planning Tools (AMPT) that reduce the workload of managing heterogeneous manned and unmanned vehicle teams. These decision-support interfaces will intuitively convey complex behavior-shaping events and operational constrains, enabling operators to efficiently perceive system status, identify response requirements, and direct automated planning tools. Under this proposed Phase II AMPT effort, we will expand prior analyses to characterize operators need for observability and directability of automation within a broader set of targeted mission domains and control settings. We will leverage this analysis to extend and refine our design of AMPT ecological mission displays for supervisory control of heterogeneous manned and unmanned vehicle teams. Finally, we will expand the breadth and depth of our AMPT mission display software prototypes and integrate these with representative Navy planning technologies, such as the Common Control System (CCS). We will use these integrated prototypes to demonstrate and evaluate our mission display approaches with subject matter experts and representative users, directly informing the development of unmanned control stations and workflows.
