Description

Next generation missile defense systems require power supplies with higher energy densities and longer run times. Innovation in reserve battery technology improving size, weight, run time, and manufacturability are needed to meet new requirements. Thermal reserve batteries are among the most widespread and reliable power supplies for missile defense systems. Performance gains in these systems will provide broad impact for a variety of programs. Thermal batteries are primarily composed of active electrochemical materials, pyrotechnic charge, insulation, and a case. Active electrochemical materials and pyrotechnic charge in thermal reserve batteries have been optimized; hence, performance gains must come from improvements in the case, insulation, and manufacturing methods.Innovations are needed to translate performance and reliability of thermal reserve batteries to missile systems with long duration missions.Cornerstone Research Group Inc. (CRG) proposes to develop advanced thermal reserve battery insulation materials that improve manufacturability, structural, and thermal performance that enable higher energy density and long duration mission capable thermal reserve batteries.
